Siobhan is wearing a butter-yellow dress and white top. Her feet are hidden by the flow of the dress as she crouches on top of a wooden chair. Her gaze is relaxed and direct at the lens. All around her are bare-brick walls of an empty house.

McGinnity Ph.D

Dr. Siobhan McGinnity’s passion for music ignited at a young age. From the linoleum living room of her Nonna’s house, she memorised the jingles of a store-bought Casio. Trained in classical piano throughout school, she went on to complete a Bachelor of Science at the University of Western Australia. Here she researched the phenomenon of perfect pitch in her neuroscience electives.

Inspired, she continued her love of music-meets-science by completing a Master’s degree in Clinical Audiology at the University of Melbourne (2012). She then embarked upon her doctoral journey, studying sound-level management in live-music venues, creating protocols for musician centred care, and analysing the hearing of sound engineers.

By the time of its publication, “Preventing Hearing Injury in the Music Industry,” was twice awarded by the National Hearing Conservation Association (USA).

Outside of research, Siobhan is an experienced clinician, lecturer and clinical educator. She also enjoys participating in panels and industry events on disability awareness and inclusion, leaning into her lived-experience.

Completing her Diploma of Auslan in 2023, Siobhan aspires to serve the industry more inclusively across the spectrum of deafness. Weaving her experience and passion into public speaking, Siobhan remains a steadfast advocate for an inclusive music industry for all.
